23 January 1944 - Attempt to Take Back Monte Natale

 5 Infantry Division History

23 Jan 44

It was arranged that 17 Infantry Brigade, now relieved and reassembled, should attack the Monte Natale feature and Solacciano, the spur to the West of it [1km North-West of Monte Natale). The object was to open up the way for an attack on Santa Maria Infante.

The Brigade plan was for 6 Seaforths to go for Spur Point 141, a spur to the North of Point 172, halfway to Santa Maria Infante, from Point 172, and 2 Royal Scots Fusiliers for Point 156, Monte Natale. 2 Northants were to push on to Santa Maria Infante on the following day.

Terrain of the Minturno-Tufo Ridge. British troops refer to Monte Natale as Point 156. Exact location to which they refer is Point 145 and shown as such on the map above. Point 156 is a hill in front of the Cemetery. (Map Frank de Planta).
